Appropriate submissions include: essays, interviews, poetry, articles, humor, satire, think-pieces, transformational fiction, political commentary, critiques/reviews and information articles related to BSN's editorial interests. We also accept black-and-white artwork; especially if it illustrates the written word.
In general, non-violent, spiritual (rather than religious) responses to contemporary issues such as education, humanitarianism, patriotism (as opposed to chauvinism), social responsibility, ecological consciousness and grassroots democracy are appropriate. You can learn more about us by perusing the About BSN and History sections of our site.
Our commentary below provides further example of our interests (or disinterests as the case may be).
You may also wish to receive a sample back issue. Send $2 and ask for a back issue that will exemplify the type of work you plan to submit.
We like to keep the general tone visionary, optimistic, upbeat, utopian, positive. We're not looking for downers, therefore, pieces that expose the harshness of reality should focus on the need for change. Think "transformational"; showing how ordinary people grow to high levels of awareness. "Fantasy" pieces should be in terms of magic, enchantment and fairy tales as opposed to the grotesque and ugly.
Please keep all written works to a maximum of two pages or approximately 2600 words.
BSN is not primarily a literary zine. We plan to have one poetry page (more or less) in each issue. As with other creative writing, we prefer material with a spiritual and/or social theme, which can be serious or have a light touch such as satire or general humor like Ogden Nash.
The main thing we're looking for is story illustrations, but good single-panel cartoons and spots are also used. We're looking for pieces with a light touch, or natural feel.
Since BSN is produced by photocopy we can only use black and white (line) art; preferably in ink, not pencil. Unfortunately that means no color artwork. Any techniques used in newspaper cartoons would be okay. That could include mechanical half tones and textures. Too much solid black is not favored.
BSN has a two-column format. Columns are about 3 1/2" wide. Art that fits in our layout is preferred. Pieces that are larger will be scaled down.
You can send clear photocopies and keep the originals. Generally, we don't work with digital graphics files. If your work is in a standard format, is black and white and photocopies well after being printed we are willing to see what we can do.
BSN is a small press, nonprofit zine run entirely by volunteers. No one makes money off it. At present, payment is a regular subscription and a classified ad, if desired, for accepted work.
Of course credits are given, which can include your web site and email and/or postal address.
You can email poetry to our and all other prose to our .

Of course. Letters can be in response an item in a particular issue or they can bring up new topics. Please be constructive and non-confrontational.
One might think from our name that we are about showing both sides of an issue. On the contrary. We feel that there are not two sides to every issue or, to put it another way, if there is good and evil we don't have to give equal time to evil. By extension, the "Establishment" and "Right Wing" have the mass media to present their sides. Both Sides Now offers a small opportunity for one to see both sides now, or the alternative. This is an alternative press publication.
